Kids have a lot of memories to keep track of. Family, friends, school – these are all events that your children want to remember. A wonderful (and fun) way for them to preserve all their memories is in a scrapbook. Here are some great tips for getting your kids interested in and involved with creating their own scrapbooks.

One of the first things to think about with kids is cost. If you’re an avid scrapbooker, you know those beautiful papers and decorative elements don’t come cheap. The thought of sliced paper and gluey messes is enough to make most moms cringe.

So what’s a mom with eager kids to do? I recommend you head to your local discount store, or, even better, take a trip to the dollar store. You’ll be able to find lots of great things at a dollar store like Family Dollar or the Dollar Tree. There’s a large variety of papers, stickers, crayons, colored pencils, and you may even be able to find some stencils, hole punches, and differently shaped scissors! Look for glitter, sequins, and other things to really dress pages up. These “extra-fancy” things can be a good motivator for your kids – let them know there will be a trip to the store to get scrapbook accessories when they’ve been well behaved!

You’ll probably want to keep the best pictures for your own scrapbooking. Save leftover pictures for your kids to use. If you’re ordering your prints, you can order extra for your kids (consider getting doubles.) You can also take them on a photo scavenger hunt to get some pictures for their own scrapbooks. Let them take pictures of family, friends, and places they love.

If you’ve been working on a project you can put aside scraps of paper and other leftovers in a plastic bin. Next time the kids are going to be working bring the bin out for them to dig through. Your kids will come up with their own unique embellishments from what you leave behind. It’s enjoyable to see just what they come up with.

Kids love to create things and scrapbooks are no different. But do remember that at least the first few times (and perhaps always with small children), you will need to be on hand to help them. You may even want to work on a few pages where they duplicate your work. This helps them understand how to cut and create embellishments. They’ll also be able to learn a little about creating attractive layouts. Having a few pages they know look good can be a good confidence booster, too.

Some ideas to have your kids do a layout on are: “Back to School,” “My Family,” “My Best Friends,” “Our Vacation,” “Summer Camp” – I’m sure you can think of others. Encourage your child to carefully pick the pictures he or she will use. Help them think out what they’d like to write on their pages. It may be best for them to practice writing them out before they actually put them in the scrapbook. Remind them that their scrapbook is for their “best work.”

With a little encouragement and some clever ideas on your part you’ll have your kids creating their own scrapbooks in no time. They’re sure to treasure the memories they preserve long into adulthood – they’ll even look forward to sharing them with their own children one day!
