Scrapbook sketches are a fabulous source of inspiration when making a scrapbook. They provide an easy-to-follow guide on how to assemble your page so that it looks fantastic while still allowing you to be as creative as you like.
I use scrapbook sketches all the time for my layouts as they always provide me with that spark of inspiration and save me from procrastinating and constantly shuffling things around my page. Since I have been using sketches I have found many ways to personalise them and adapt them to suit my current project.
They include:
1. Using patterned scrapbooking papers. This is by far the easiest way to really personalise your layouts. By selecting various papers and colours to mix and match you are infusing your page with your own style and personality.
No matter what sketch you choose to use, if you gave that same sketch to someone else, their page would turn out completely different to yours as they would choose different colours and patterns.
2. Rotate the sketch or take the mirror of it to give a unique perspective of the design. You’d be surprised how different your page will look just by rotating the design by 90 degrees.
3. Remove or add one or two elements of the design to suit your project.
For example, if a sketch features two photos, you may choose to use only one and leave some ‘white space’ where the other photo would have been as a design element. This can work particularly well if you have detailed patterned papers as your background as it provides a great opportunity to show them off.
4. Change the shape of some of the elements in the sketch.
For example, most sketches will show photos as being rectangular in shape. Perhaps in some of your layouts you could crop your photos into squares or circles, thus creating a unique design element for your page.
The possibilities are endless. The thing to keep in mind is that scrapbook sketches serve as a source of inspiration and guidance. There is no rule to say you must follow them exactly (although of course, you can). Play around with them, make them match your project and make sure you have lots of fun!
