Why do you think WWE continues to do this with heels-turned-babyfaces?

They usually strip the person of alot of, if not everything, of what people grew to like about him in the first place and what made people start cheering them. MVP, Kennedy, and now Morrison recently, all heels turned face because of their crowd reactions, and WWE turns them into ‘cookie cutter’ babyfaces. I think its, in part, why all the love for Morrison has died off a bit. His promos are now corny and lame. Why cant WWE leave some of the elements of what made people like these guys in the first place?

You cant say its to ‘relate to the kids and fit in with the PG era’, because as an example, when Razor Ramon turned face in 1993, which was also a PG era, he kept alot of the heel mannerisms that made him popular, ala throwing the toothpick at his opponent.

The face is the “straight man” of a feud. He sets up the heel to “do the jokes” as it were, and then he reacts to them. As such, there isn’t a whole lot for the face to do, and the role is pretty generic in that the role is pretty defined, pretty cut and dried. The heel does (and says) all of the “cool stuff” that get the big reactions from the fans.

The face is supposed to be the “good guy”, the one who plays by the rules, is respectful of everybody, and “settles things in the ring, like men”. For the most part he is NOT supposed to upstage the heel. Main event (and in some cases, mid-card) faces are supposed to be “pillars of society” and “paragons of sportsmanship”. Their job is to be the “victim” for the heels to do their dirty tricks on, so the fans will hate and boo them. And when that hatred is at it’s high point, THEN the face wins the match to prove that “playing by the rules and doing the right thing” is the correct way of doing things to succeed. This is also supposed to prove the old adage, “cheaters never prosper”.

Without the villain doing his outrageous and dirty tricks, and the hero standing strong and resolute in the face of adversity, there is no story. The face represents what is “good and right”, a straight-forward role with little deviation. The heels come up with various ways of trying to tear down, and in some cases corrupt, that “good”. If the face doesn’t adhere to that rather strict role, he is no longer a face.

The 90’s saw the phasing out of the traditional face in pro wrestling, the clear-cut “good guy”. There are VERY few traditional faces left in pro wrestling, much less the WWE. By that same token, there are VERY few traditional heels left, too. The 90’s saw the blurring of lines until almost every pro wrestler was that new type called “tweener”. This type of character is good in that he’s generally acceptable and fairly over with the fans. He’s also bad in that heel/face turns have a fraction of the impact that they used to have. Today, most people really don’t care that much about heel/face turns and worse, they EXPECT them to occur regularly, thus they are never surprised by them. In fact, a lot of fans are constantly on alert for ANYTHING that MIGHT signal a turn.

Performers such as MVP, Kennedy, and Morrison have switched roles, from being the perpetrators of the dirty tricks, to setting them up and reacting to them for other performers. They are the “straight men” and they are not supposed to have much “personality” beyond being “good guys” and victims for the heels. We don’t watch the WWE to see the good guys “preach” at us; we watch the WWE to see the bad guys victimize them.
